Alice's illustrators

Postby KaeS » Wed Mar 29, 2006 9:52 pm

Allright, everybody knows Tenniel's illustrations.
Most of us know Carroll's, Rackham's too...
But there is a lot of illustrators for Alice.

What I want is to find the more illustrations, especially from those unknown artists:
Blanche McManus (1896)
Peter Newell (1901)
Fanny Cory (1902)
Thomas Maybank (1907)
Charles Robinson (1907)
WH Walker (1907)
Charles Pears (1908)
Katherine (KM?) Roberts (1908)
Thomas Robinson (1908)

I'm ok to give you pictures by
Lewis Carroll,
John Tenniel,
Gertrude Thomson,
LJ Bridgeman
Maria Kirk
Bessie Pease Gutmann
Arthur Rackham
Millicent Sowerty
Harry Rountree

If you find websites where I can take pictures from the missing artists, post it here. I'm just waiting to find these artists before begin 1909+ years.

Thx!

Hi KaeS...

Try Lauren Harman's site: www.laurenharman.com/alice/index.html

She has some terrific info posted there, filled with Alice thingies and links, and pics of dated illustrations listed alphabetically by artist. Keep in mind that many of the really early illustrators for those glorious cover boards at the turn of the century were created 'anonymously'... Rarely signed.

Then recompile your list and repost it if you'd like, and we'll try to add some that you might not have. DIS:-)

KaeS...

I don't think you're going to find an online site that has all the illustrations each artist produced. But Lauren's site gives you the info on them so you can research each one. I don't think there is anything online that has all the illustrations for each artist. You'll probably need to purchase the books and reproduce them yourself.

There are two recent publications that have compiled Alice art: The Art of Alice (Stephanie Lovett Stoffel ISBN: 0765191334 and All Things Alice (Linda Sunshine ISBN: 1400054419). But they, of course, have only a smattering of illustrated depictions of certain artists.

What are you planning to do with them when/if you do find them? :?

I'm actually working on an adaptation of the book for theatre.
So I'm trying to view interpretations of each characters, in order to use them for creation of characters. But I'm not really satisfied, because a lot of illustrators made innocent illustrations, in children's books, and I'm very frustrated:
for me Alice is not innocent at all, I want to show how cruel is the world, that is the part of the book that interessed me, so I cannot do anything with most of these illustrations...

And I would like to go far away from Tenniel's and Disney's visions, because they are to well-known. I will take my inspiration in Rackham's and Salvador Dali's characters, which seems stranger for me.

KaeS...

Yep... Rackham and Dali are certainly darker... But you'll need to look into more recent illustrators. For a few "darker" images (at least IMOP) try:

AAIW - Iassen Ghiuselev 2003 ISBN: 1-894965-00-0
AAIW - Gavin O'Keefe 1990 isbn: 1-875244-04-2
AAIW - Tony Ross 1994 isnb: 0-689-31864-2
AAIW - David Hall 1986 isbn: 0-671-63565-4
AAIW - S. Michelle Wiggins 1983 isbn: 0-394-53227-9
AAIW - Abelardo Morell 1998 isbn: 0-525-46094-2
AAIW - Angel Dominguez 1996 isbn: 1-885183-47-x
AAIW & TTLG - Marketa Prachaticka 1989 isbn: 0-922984-01-8
AAIW - Barry Moser 1983 LCCC#: 82-40110
AAIW - John Bradley 1992 isbn: 1-56138-100-4

I think there might be enough diversity in those modern versions to 'inspire' you... I've found some of the illustrations rather intense and some very grotesque... Certainly not for kids.

If you haven't researched comics, try these:

Hatter M - Image Comics - Artist Ben Templesmith
Batman Madness - DC - (Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Special - Tim Sale
Wonderland - Arrow Comics Group - Artists Danny Wall and Randy Zimmerman
The Oz Wonderland Chronicles - Buy Me Toys - Ben Avery & Casey Heying

Just food for thought. Good luck with your theatre project. ;)

And... Anne Bachelier whose impressive works can be found at the CFM Gallery in New York City... Her magnificent AIW - TTLG 'flip' book with 3-page fold-out illustrations was produced in 2005 and can certainly be interpreted as less than innocent.

Good luck... ;)

My personal favorite, Anthony Browne's more recent version. In bright color (I think it took him 2 years to paint it), it has something of Tenniel but by no means relies on him. It is quite original, but also in the tradition of surrealism:

You also might want to try Google Images (www.google.com and click on images), entering the artist's name in double quotes along with Alice.
