The Nabakov Translation
As I don't speak a single word of Russian I can't possibly comment on how good the translation actually is, though from the English preface Nabakov seems to have taken the route I prefer by translating the spirit of Carroll's fantastic wordplay, sometimes to a quite remarkable degree, rather than just the words.
I can comment on the illustrations. First of all you need to note that you should not be put off from buying by the cover. It would be too easy to think, "Oh, another Tenniel-illustrated edition in a foreign language - nothing there for me." But it really is ONLY the cover that is Tenniel (and I have no idea why they chose to do that!), the inside illustrations are line drawings by S. Zalshupin. There are not very many of them and they are far more primitive than Tenniel's but it's always interesting to see a different approach to Alice artwork, and there is a decidedly bizarre quality to them in places (the croquet game is especially odd).
I'm told that if you speak Russian you should buy this translation. I can add that if, like me, you are fascinated by the vast number of ways in which the work has been illustrated, you should also consider it.
