Amazon.com Review:
This beautiful, 868-page leather-bound volume contains a delightful collection of stories from one of history's most beloved children's authors. Lewis Carroll's stories are still as fresh and appealing as when they were first published more than a century ago. John Tenniel's original illustrations accompany the Alice stories and bring to life the wildly popular characters so well known to us all: the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and a passel of others. Carroll, one of 11 children, knows his audience well. His stories--clever, provocative, and bizarre--capture the imaginations of children worldwide. Though a prolific storyteller from childhood, he went on to become a mathematician, a fact evidenced by the Tangled Tales serial, which contains a mathematical equation in each installment. Other stories included in this collection are "The Hunting of the Snark," which was composed backward, in a sense, when inspiration for the tale came by way of the last line; "Rhyme? And Reason?"; the Sylvie and Bruno books; and the original Alice story, "Alice's Adventures Underground," penned and illustrated in Carroll's own hand. Two never-before-printed poems, originally inscribed in two storybooks and presented as mementos to a little girl and boy, conclude this enchanting collection.

Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars - Wonderful
Though about half the stuff in this book was written specifically for children, I did not get around to reading Carroll until just recently. Boy, have I been missing out on a literary genius! I thought Lewis Carroll was just the psuedonym of the weird guy who wrote that Alice stuff. However, the two Alice books are truly quite brilliant and demonstrate an imagination that probably is not seen very often anymore. The details and plot are admittedly seemingly crazy, but underneath there is a brilliant ensemble of puns and subtle humorous references. To top it off, Carroll simply has a way with writing an entertaining story. "Sylvie and Bruno" is in many ways aimed more for adults, being an odd-but-amazing mixture of sweet fairy tale, star-crossed romance, and intellectual discussion. It is probably the most "dull" of the works, but it is extremely creative. I think my favorite of the works were his poems, which range in aura from humorous and quirky to dark and serious. Carroll has a way with words. The writing is gifted and shows much learning as well as creativity.

Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars - Beautiful!
I loved it. It has the complete illustrated works of Lewis Carroll, including a facsimile of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, which is is the first draft of Wonderland. Oh, and by the way, it's a much prettier dark blue than it looks like. Leatherbound, it's well worth the purchase if you like Alice at all!

Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars - What a crazy author!
I'm thru most of this book now - I read both the Alice stories and the Hunting of a Snark. I really enjoy classic stories that have passed the test of time. Books that have been read and re-read generation to generation. Lewis Carroll has some of the most off the wall images in his stories and poems. I still have alot of the poems to get thru. But I'm having to do it a few at a time and then I have to read something with some sense to it, before going back and getting another dose of this wacko's imagination. Both the Alice's are really good and I throughly enjoyed the Hunting of a Snark poem even though I'd never heard of it before. Totally recommend this book to anyone who wants something different to read. Or who is still a child at heart.

Rating: 1.0 out of 5 stars - very bad paper quality
I was expecting a quality product from this 'deluxe' edition. From the outside it looks solid, but the pages are made of see-through paper, thinner than from a dictionary.. Not only does it undo the advantages of a hard cover, leather bound etc, but it also ruins the many drawings inside the book. Of course the internet-customer is ignorant of this quality aspect until the book arrives in his/her own disappointed hands.

Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars - ...down the rabbit hole
This book is really for the person who is really into Carroll and will read through all of his works. It's a thick volume and is useful to me, but this is because i am writing a book so i'm probably not the best judge since i have to read all of the collected works. Another astute reviewer said, "Do you really want all of the collected works?" But for the price, i say, you may as well buy the book, then you can see what you like and skip around. Who is to say or dictate that you must read cover to cover. You may find there are writings of Caroll thatyou didn't know about before - such as his poetry and so on. I own the book and find it very handy for reference but also as a genral book of interst. It's also a good gift book for adults and children alike and is a handsome volume and is not muddled up with annotations like many of Carroll's books are these days, which is fine, but more for the scholar. This is the perfect book to dip into and again, a good gift book and as a former publisher i can tell you that the price-point is excellent for what you get here. A bargain. If you like Carroll's Alice books, you may as well buy this since it will cost you more or as much to buy both of them. This way, you get both Alice books and then some. There is an argumnt right there. sadi ranson-polizzotti
