The character of Peter Pan first came to life in the stories J. M. Barrie told to five brothers -- three of whom were named Peter, John, and Michael. Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars - Peter Pan with a forward by Susan Cooper
Barrie, J.M. (2003). Peter Pan. New York: Aladdin Paperbacks. 0689866917 It seems with several movie versions, Hook, Finding Neverland, and the actual play, nobody could escape knowing something of the story of Peter Pan. However, it seems that only a small number of people actually read the book these days. Those that do, will discover a shockingly complicated and difficult text. Jumps in time and point of view, numerous metaphors, images, cultural and historic references and an interrupting narrator will make this a challenging read for many young readers. Plus Peter is really forgetful and potentially annoying. Nonetheless, there are uses for this book and exercises that may be completed. Just don't do them with too young of a crowd. If I were to use this book in the classroom it would be with high school students. Since there are so many rich themes and metaphors and since most students are probably familiar with some version of the narrative this book could be of good use in introducing analysis and literary theory. It is undeniable that Barrie captured a sense of magic, fun, and childhood that most children's writers cannot help but desire to equal. And because of this, there are great fun exercises that can be done, such as having children create or draw their own maps of Neverland. Since the book is also a play, it lends itself to being reenacted. This could help with visualization. Also, a special note if teachers use the edition of the book forwarded by author Susan Cooper--Her comments would influence anyone's reading of the text. For me, most striking is the delicate description of Barrie as "yearning for little-boy love" (p. XVI). Activities to do with the book: Have students create their own Neverlands, analyze the book's literary themes, enact scenes, research Barrie's life, discuss the imagination and separation between reality and fantasy, consider issues of power and the conditions of motherhood, the construction of masculinity and femininity etc. Students could also discuss the many reinterpretations and sequels to the narrative. Favorite Quotes: "All children, except one, grow up" (p. 1). "To die will be an awfully big adventure" (p. 123). "I'm youth, I'm joy" (p. 195). [...]

Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars - Imaginative and flawed...
Not a whole lot to say about this book. It's well-written and imaginative, with some great characters, though the plot maunders a bit. (It takes entirely too long to get to Neverland...and once there, not too many "awfully big adventures" occur.) Better read than not, I'd say...it'll take ninety minutes.

Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars - Great Fun
This was an interesting book, full of adventure but also has a more serious side about the need to grow up and grow in wisdom. It makes us realize the consequences of our actions and also the importance of family and friends. The questions it left unanswered for me were: -What school is it that Hook went to? What is known for its slouch and walk? -The question of fairies that are unsure of their sex? Androgynous like angels? -Forget fairies and you kill them the power of naming or unnaming A great read for children of all ages, and if you like Peter Pan then check out Capt. Hook: The Adventures of a Notorious Youthby J.V. Hart for an introduction to Hook as a young man. (First written as Journal Reading Notes in 1999.)

Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars - Not for 4-8 year olds!
Full of imagination, adventure and wit, but NOT for 4-8 year olds as listed here on Amazon. My intelligent 10 year old struggled through it and my 7 year old looked like a deer in headlights. This book is more appropriate for high school ages at best. Also, beware of Tink's potty mouth and the use of the word "orgy".

Rating: 3.0 out of 5 stars - www.freewebs.com/hlgstrider
I am not sure if Peter Pan is well written. I am not sure if I could diagram the plot. I am sure I would never have written that story the way Barrie wrote it . . . which is why only Barrie could write Peter Pan. Only Barrie could break literary rules and plot conventions so well to create something so timeless. Peter Pan is in no way real, but the fantasy of it is in some ways everyone's fantasy. Barries seems to have been every child. He understands them, heartless, beautiful creatures that they are. He knows that Neverland is not always very good and it can be very frightening. It is that place right before we fall asleep that mothers try to soften with night lights, but that can be all too harsh when we are left alone with Captain James Cook, the scurvy dog who is never more sinister than when he is polite. Barrie is the guardian of children's dreams. His work should never be forgotten.
