Nothing lasts forever
I love this mug! The basic idea is brilliant and the design is well executed - it cmbines two of Tenniel's original illustrations to magically* create one of the most famous moments of the story - Genius! The disappearing effect worked perfectly upon the addition of boiling water (more tea?) and was very amusing.

However, as with other reviewers, I found that the actual execution leaves something to be desired. My mug came with instructions not to soak it in hot water whilst washing, which I ignored. As a result, the design has started to wash off - Heartbreaking! I'm so disappointed. My mug now resides, unseen, unused and unappreciated in the kitchen cupboard, to spare it from any further damage.

I recommend that if you buy this mug you either wash it VERY carefully, or you buy it on the understanding that it is essentially a temporary, disposable novelty. (I still love it though)

This Cheshire Cat mug is adorable. As hot liquid heats the mug, the Cat disappears all except for his smile. The mug arrived within a short time and in perfect condition. I recommend this mug for any other Cheshire Cat or Alice fans. It is especially cute for me because my last name is Cheshire.

- Great idea, poorly executed
The concept is a brilliant ode to Alice .... pour in hot water, and the cat disappears. First off, the water has to be, like, piping hot for the cat to fade. But that's not really the flaw. About a week after purchase, I noticed that the LETTERS were acting funny, too. The "A" in "Alice" was gone! and the lettering in the quote "We'll, I've often seen a cat, ect" was twisted up and around. At first I though, wow! this is awesome. My Alice mug actually made me pause for a second and question my own sanity, which is what the ideal Alice in Wonderland mug should do, I say. But then I thought to myself, if this goes on much longer, it's not going to be an Alice mug anymore, but rather a blank white, boring mug with 0 value! So here's my assessment. The mug states that only the CAT is supposed to fade. So the rest of the mug shouldn't be disappearing too. That means it's a bad product. On the other hand, I think this mug would make a cool prank-gift for any Alice fan if you don't tell the person what the mug does! : )

This was bought as a Christmas gift for my daughter. The mug is great; cool artwork and the letters disappear they way are supposed to. Our problem is with washing the mug. As instructed we've always handwashed it. However, after a few uses the lettering started to wipe off, no matter how careful we tried to be. If not for the issue with the lettering this mug would receive 5 stars.

I bought this mug for my daughter for Christmas. However the second time it was hand washed in warm water the design on the outside of the mug washed off! Very poorly made.

- Fantastic
The outside of the mug can come off if cleaned in the dishwasher or with anything abrasive (as the box warns)--so just use soap and water. I assume this is why the other reviewer had a problem. Otherwise it's awesome. The cat "disappears" pretty well, although the ink isn't 100% invisible (it turns into a very faint yellow tinge). Still, good enough to be pretty amusing (to me) and worth the money.
