played safe, but bizarrely
This surprisingly obscure Paramount super-production goes to great lengths to recreate the look of Tenniel's drawings, and is as faithful to the story as any adaptation that combines both books could be. The film plays it very safe, interpreting each scene in the nicest, most pleasant way possible. It's often rather dull and slow, but it's something of a novelty with its abundance of classic Hollywood talent, and it ends up settling into its own bizarre and (probably unintentional) absurdist rhythm after a while. Of all the "safe" film versions of these stories that have been made over the years, it might be the best. Give it a look.
