I like Tenniel and Peake's illustrations best (I like Tenniel better
). All six of my Alice books have illustrations by Tenniel, but considering that I've bought all except one copy at the library for 50 cents or under, it's not like I was looking for other illustrators.
I think that Carroll's own illustrations in Alice's Adventures Underground, where pretty fantastic too!

to me those are the best one... also with Mervyn Peake.
others like... A.E.Jackson/Harry Roundtree/Peter Weavers are quite good.
Dali for a more surrealistic feeling and Brian Froud mixing fairies with Alice stuff.

Re: Alice Illustrators
For Dali's you definently should read the book first. I haven't knowingly seen any of Froud's. My Bantam Classic edition has a pic on the cover by Milo Winter that's pretty interesting. I've only seen two other illustrations for Alice done by him, but I really like them.Dali for a more surrealistic feeling and Brian Froud mixing fairies with Alice stuff.

I love John Tenniel's illustrations as much as the next Alice fan. There is so much detail and it a joy to look at.
I have a 2001 edition of Adventures in Wonderland which was illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. The pictures range from small, simple black and whilte pictures (Like Tenniel's but in Oxenbury's style) to large two-page coloured pieces. I love her works too.

Henry Holiday illustrated "The Hunting of the Snark". Seemingly the cooperation between Holiday and CLD went most smoothly. And in http://holiday.snrk.de you can see, that the result has been underestimated since today.hi.
