All the time i see a costume of him with bunny ears, where did this originate? Did it actually come from somewhere or was it just made up as a way to combine the rabbit and the hatter?

Right now I can't recall if I know any adaptation with such depiction of Hatter. It is possible some costumes for sale or fanarts depict him in a hat with rabbit ears; it might be a reference to March Hare or just associating all rabbit things with Wonderland.
