Alice characters [Carroll's characters en plus]

Postby Piecraft » Thu May 26, 2005 12:08 am

I was wondering, if anyone could help me compile a list of characters from the movies or books of Alice, both non-Carrollian and Carrollian.

This means the following books by Lewis Carroll:
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland
Alice Through The Looking-Glass And What She Found There
The Hunting Of The Snark
Sylvie & Bruno
Sylvie & Bruno Concluded
A Tangled Tale
Bruno's Revenge
Phantasmagoria & Other Poems

along with characters present in the movie adaptations of Alice, for example Disney's and Jan Svankmajer's etc... and American McGee's Alice and so on... If you could be so helpful to list all known characters down on this topic from what you know it would be appreciated. I am trying to gain insight of characters created by other peopl eincluding those used by Carroll for a project I have in mind: viewtopic.php?t=79

Thanks to anyone who dares!

For the Disney version, the only new character I can think of is the Doorknob... unless you want to include the creatures from the Tulgey Wood.
Although if you want to extend into the game Kingdom Hearts (its Wonderland level being an adaption of an adaption!) you then also have Sora, Donald and Goofy, as well as the enemy "Heartless" (unfortunately there are no Wonderland-specific ones!) and the boss "Trickmaster".

I found a page with KH images but it doesn't allow direct linking to pictures: http://kh2.co.uk/?kh=Artwork
Just look for the image numbers in the address - under the heading Heartless:
50 = Trickmaster
56 = White Mushroom (appears occasionally, not an enemy)
70 = Large Body
79 = Red Nocturne
(missing pictures of "Soldier" and "Shadow" Heartless)

That's great Jess, this is very useful I didn't think to look there. Are the other characters who look similar to those you already listed also somehow related to the Alice universe? Thanks again!

The other characters aren't really linked to Wonderland at all because they don't appear in that level. (Each level is based on a different Disney movie.)

You might want to check some other KH links, if you're not familiar with the game:
Official site: http://www.kingdom-hearts.com/uk/index.html (pretty, but not much info)
GameFAQs info page: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/data/516587.html

I can't think of anything else directly related to Alice, but I can think of a few series that have referenced it. Mostly really cute stuff, so it might not be what you're after, but anyway:
Cardcaptor Sakura Episode 24: http://www.miraclegenki.com/cherrybloss ... ncaps.html
Slayers TRY Episode 15 (very, VERY random): http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/victory ... ml#fifteen

Obscure Alice Characters

Piecraft:

You might also want to check out Mike Miller and Ben Avery's 'Lullaby Comics'... They've created an interesting Alice and Company.

Good luck in your search.

wow thanks for the info Jess and jerseybelle, it's been helpful.

That Kingdom Hearts game seems interesting. At the moment I haven't had the chance to search for any more characters, however I will be acquiring a volume of the complete works of Carroll very shortly so when I do recieve it I shall be able to add to the list. Also I am interested in knowing whether anyone (perhaps Tweedledammed would be so kind if he found the time) could place the characters from the following books:

Alice Through The Needle's Eye
The Automated Alice
A New Alice In The Old Wonderland
Alice's Jounrey Beyond The Moon

or any other sequel, trequel, prequel or spin-off boosk or stories involving Alice.

Thanks again for all your help and consideration with this topic.

You may think me mad but there is method to my madness!

Could someone tell me where Nobody is referred to in Alice Through The Looking-Glass And What She Found There

According to the annotations in Alice's Journey Beyond the Moon Nobody is referred to in Through The Looking-Glass, 'the same Nobody Alice saw coming up the road, and who never gets executed.' I can't seem to verify this because I can't find the references in Through The Looking Glass. If someone could point them out it would be appreciated. Thanks.

It isn't a character it's a running joke through chapter 7 (The Lion And The Unicorn).

"I see nobody on the road," said Alice.
"I only wish I had such eyes," the King remarked in a fretful tone. "To be able to see Nobody, and at that distance too."

etc.

And later

"Who did you pass on the road?"
"Nobody".
"Quite right, this young lady saw him too."

And

"So Nobody walks slower than you."
"I'm sure nobody walks mauch faster than I do"
"He can'n't do that or else he'd have been here first"

(Extracts slightly edited)

Thanks Tweedledamned now I remember. Yes you could say Nobody is not a charcter but at the same time they talk of Nobody as though it were in both Through The Looking Glass and Beyond The Moon.

Thanks for listing the characters for a New Alice In Old Wonderland (which I have yet to read) - I am currently reading through Jeff Noon's Automated Alice

And thanks jerseybelle for adding the Wasp to the list, I forgot about him.

If you guys come up with anything else either film/comic/animation/videogame/book related just put down the characters.

I have come across a comic book called Lullaby: Wisdom Seeker which involves characters from fairytales who have to defeat some dark force that has taken over their land, a team of heroes: Alice (from Wonderland), Pied Piper, Jim Hawkins, Little Red Riding Hood to name but a few are the ones wh set off to help their world.
