Your Dream "Wonderland" Cast

Postby wondersyndrome » Tue Oct 13, 2009 6:42 pm

I got this idea of a forum topic after seeing of all the different movie adaptations listed on Wikipedia. :D

Picture the situation: you are the head of casting for a directing company planning to make two films based on the Alice novels, and you are choosing the actors you would like to join the cast... and you can pick anyone you want!

Make a shortlist of actors you wish to act or voice the parts (next to the role they would play,) then give a little explanation why you think they will be good for the job.

I haven't finished my list yet but it would be fun to see everyone else's. ;)

To be quite honest I'd like to pick unknowns or very little known actors to play the characters so you don't just see, hear, or think of the character as the real person playing them. I'd like for Alice and the other characters that are "human" to be played by real people and the rest done up on a computer.

....I have a major think for Tim Curry, though, and I think with just the way his voice sounds he might be a good Cheshire Cat if you were looking at a more serious take on him than the silly Disney version. Two other voice actors I had in mind are sadly deceased.

The majority of actors I'd choose are also. :(

You can pick deceased actors if you want. No one is stopping you from doing so.

My dream cast would, invariably, be British.

Rachel Hurd-Wood would have been a good Alice, but I fear she may be too old.
Romola Garai maybe, with light brown hair. It suits her complexion better anyway...

As for the rest, I'm stumped, really. I'd have to look in to it more.

Richard Vernon (Slartibartfast) as the White Knight.

I would pick Evanna Lynch as Alice. I think she would do an amazing job. She has that airy, daydreaming voice and a gentle, otherworldly quality to her. The way I pictured Alice.

what do you think?

If Jodelle Ferland had an English accent (although she proved she could already do that in Tideland) she would be an amazing Alice. Her face has that impish look and her hair is so much like the Tenniel illustrations. Plus she looks like a little girl, rather than a 20 year old woman as is sometimes the case in Alice films.

I know it is not Wonderland but who would you cast for a biopic about Lewis Carroll? I always think of people who are not quite the right ages in relation to each other. It must be incredibly hard to cast a movie.

Whoopi Goldberg would be the cat. Dakota Fanning would be Alice. Martin Short would be the hatter. Zach Mills would be the rabbit. Anne Hathaway would be the Queen of Hearts.

Audrey Hepburn as Alice. Or maybe Grace Kelly.
Me as the Queen of Hearts.
Lewis Carroll directs the thing. (Also, I bet he could be a good gardener.)
Lorina Liddell as the Lory.
Alice Liddell is the Dormouse.
And maybe some of you guys.

I don't know about casting: I'd probably turn to unknowns as well and then go through an overly-meticulous process of auditions and talent searches to find the perfect fits and the movie would never be made. Although lately I've entertained the idea that Josie Lawrence would make a fun (perhaps older) Alice: She has a nice balance of plucky sweetness and manic quirkiness-I've always though Alice would be a bit offbeat and eccentric.

On the production side of things, if I wasn't doing the film myself then I think Terry Gilliam might be a good choice to helm an Alice adaptation. If I could really do absolutely anything I might consider getting Chuck Jones to work on an animated version or get a circa-1984 Echo & the Bunnymen to work on the score.

Well for the Mad Hatter I'd choose David Jason :)

I would choose Mary Petruolo as Alice in my dream cast :)
She's a young Italian actress and she's so beautiful! I've always imagined Alice as a blonde girl with blue eyes! :)
