Summer school: Lewis Carroll’s Oxford

During this summer you can once more follow a week long course about Lewis Carroll in Oxford, UK.

During the course, you will explore Lewis Carroll’s books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and examine their origins in Oxford (town and gown, architecture, personalities) as well as hidden histories and controversies. The course will also look at Alice’s further adventures in art and popular culture, science and politics and the question of why, 150 years later, Alice is still so fascinating to us.

On most weekday mornings you will enjoy small group seminars, followed by a plenary lecture before lunch. During the afternoons you are free to explore places of interest in and around Oxford or participate in the programme’s social activities.

Your tutor will be Dr Franziska Kohlt, editor of the Lewis Carroll Society’s ‘Lewis Carroll Review’ and inaugural Carrollian Fellow at USC.

The course is part of the Inspiring Oxford summer school programme. It is aimed at non-specialists, and courses are designed for an international audience aged 18 and over. No prior knowledge is required, and classes are pitched at an introductory level.

Date: Sun 06 Jul 2025 – Sat 12 Jul 2025
