Lecture: Off with her head! – Lewis Carroll and Violence
On the 13th of October there will be a lecture about violence in Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. It will take place in London (UK).
Lewis Carroll’s worlds of the imagination are places of unexpectedly violent encounters: from the despotic Queen of Hearts terrorising Wonderland with threats of wholesale decapitation to those battling duos beyond the Looking-Glass, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Lion and the Unicorn and the Red and White Knights. This topic will be considered in the lecture.
155th Anniversary of Alice in Wonderland
Exactly 155 years ago, Charles Dodgson started telling his ‘Wonderland’ tales to Alice and her sisters, during a boat trip.
The story arose at 4 July 1862, and was continued on further trips with the children. The tales evolved into the manuscript ‘Alice’s Adventures Under Ground’.
Later, Dodgson (under his pen name ‘Lewis Carroll’) decided to publish the story. On 4 July 1865, the first edition of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ was printed – which was 3 years later, now exactly 152 years ago!
Alice’s Day 2017
The annual Alice’s Day in Oxford (UK) is coming up! This year this fun event will take place on 1 July.
The day provides fun for the whole family, with many events taking place. There’s street theatre, live music, circus skills, guided tours, and more. This year’s theme is ‘riddles & puzzles’.
“Inspired by Alice” Family Fun Day
On the 6th of August, head to the historic Guildford Castle grounds (UK) for a day of entertainment inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice!
During this ‘family fun day’, there will be amongst others:
performances and readings of Alice in Wonderland- family activities
- craft activities
- live music
- stalls and refreshments
You can bring a picknick to enjoy in the gardens and come dressed as your favorite character!

Exhibition: Alice in Wonderland – themes and variations
The Guildford Museum (UK) will be showing several displays from 13 May to 8 July and from 15 July to 9 September. They will be about the several themes and variations of the famous ‘Alice’ stories.
In a series of small changing displays, the museum will explore:
- how Alice and her Wonderland have been illustrated across the years and around the world;
- how the book has been adapted on stage and on screen;
- how artists have been inspired by Carroll’s creations;
- how Alice has been approprated for every purpose you can inmagine, from advertising to pop music.

Looking for speaker: Chess and Through the Looking Glass
The Lewis Carroll Society of the UK is looking for a speaker for a talk related to the theme of Chess in ‘Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there’.
Alice’s Day is an annual event in Oxford, UK and will be held on 1 July. The theme for this year is ‘Games & Puzzles’. The Society will be organizing several talks around this theme, but is still looking for a speaker for the talk ‘A great huge game of Chess’.
